2010 Summer Programs

For students entering grades 3-8

Looking for adventure in the summer of 2010?  Join the Lloyd Center for an exciting summer outdoors!

We offer one and two-week programs that may include canoeing, camping, snorkeling, exploring coastal habitats, setting up and maintaining fresh and saltwater aquaria, discovering vernal pools and more.

In its 29th season, the Lloyd Center’s Summer Programs are designed to give motivated students an opportunity to explore different aspects of environmental science.

All sessions include field study, laboratory work, and fun!

FRESHWATER WETLANDS

4th & 5th Grades       
July 7th  - 16th
Instructor: Amanda Wilkinson  

8:30 am - 3:00 pm (Monday-Friday)


Explore the area’s ponds, swamps, marshes, bogs, and rivers in this 8-day hands-on course. 

We will collect wetland creatures, learn to build terrariums and set up tanks - so don't be afraid to get wet and muddy!

WARM BLOOD - COOL COAST
  
4th - 6th Grades
July 19th- 23rd

The mammals and birds of our coast are amazing!

These warm-blooded creatures have unique adaptations for survival in their salty world.  

Come explore beaches looking for coastal birds and discover which land mammals roam beaches, day and night.

Climb aboard and embark on a marine mammal cruise to see these amazing creatures close up!

NEW - CREATURES OF THE NIGHT

6th - 8th  Grades                
July 19th – 22nd
Instructor: Rachel Stronach

5:30 pm - 9:30 pm (Monday-Thursday)

Come explore the Lloyd Center at night! 

We'll look for signs of nocturnal animals, spend an evening paddling the Slocums River, identify constellations and find out what's glowing in the water.

CANOE DO IT?

6th - 8th  Grades                
July 26th – 30th
Instructor: Liz Moniz

8:30 am - 3:00 pm (Monday-Friday)

Welcome aboard!

Grab your paddle and life vest because we are spending this week on the water learning basic paddle strokes, boating safety and canoe rescue techniques. 

We will explore our local rivers to refine and test our skills before gearing up for our day at the lake and the overnight campout!

MARINE BIOLOGY

7th & 8th Grades
August 2nd - 6th

Come explore the ocean and coastal ecosystems.  Learn about the fascinating world of sea animals, large and small. 

Collect live organisms while snorkeling and beachcombing. 

Visit Mystic Aquarium for  first-hand observations of amazing creatures and have an encounter with the beautiful Beluga whale!

NEW - WALK ON THE WILD SIDE 

3rd & 4th Grades
August 9th - 13th
Instructor: Amanda Wilkinson

8:30am - 3:00pm (Monday - Friday)



Join us at the Lloyd Center and investigate the creatures that live in the local forests and coastal envirnonments. 

While exploring these habitats, we will serch for tiny insects, seek amphibians, listen for birds and look for evidence of mammal activity.

NEW - GO CONFIGURE

5th & 6th Grades
August 9th - 11th
Instructor: Liz Moniz

8:30am - 3:00pm (Monday - Wednesday)


If you build it, we can play.  In this 3-day course we will plan and build projects with nature connections. 

Bird feeders, fish traps, bird house and insect cages are just a few of the items that you could construct. 

We will use as many natural materials as possible  - and you will take your creations home!
