Education | Overview

The Lloyd Center offers hands-on science programs for school children from kindergarten through college, but our primary focus is kindergarten through 8th grade.  Our programs are designed to meet the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in Science and Technology/Engineering and History/Social Studies.

The Center’s philosophy is that hands-on, experiential learning brings the study of science alive. Through this approach, students develop and retain knowledge of how the environment works, and in the process hopefully, become the next generation of environmental stewards.  This active-learning approach allows for a diversity of students, learning styles and perspectives to be drawn into science education. During 2006, approximately 13,000 students participated in our programs from schools in Fall River, Dartmouth, New Bedford, Taunton, Westport, Acushnet, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Somerset, Rehoboth, Onset, Lakeville, Norfolk, Middleboro, Rochester, Weston, Middleboro, Holliston, Newton, MA as well as Tiverton, Little Compton, Portsmouth, and Providence, Rhode Island. 

During the summer, the Lloyd Center offers a “Young Naturalist” program for children
5 – 7 years old. These two-day sessions (2 ½ hours per day) combine hands-on science activities, crafts, snacks and outdoor activities into fun, educational opportunities for children to explore the natural world.

For students entering 3rd – 8th grades, the Lloyd Center offers one-and-two week science education programs that help students develop a better understanding of science topics that include marine biology, freshwater wetlands, coastal ecology and canoeing.
