Art Drive to Preview eBay Auction Cod in Two Events
This year, two events will preview the 37 “Classic Cod” artworks created by local artists prior to the Art Drive’s annual eBay auction, which will start at 7 PM on Saturday, August 3 and end the evening of Monday, August 12
This is the fourth year that Art Drive artists have created outrageously original fish to auction on eBay, with proceeds shared among artists, the Lloyd Center for the Environment and the Art Drive.
Artists were given four-foot-long cutouts of the cod, the Massachusetts state fish, to complete with no limits on creativity or interpretation. The results range from an improbable Louis Vuitton” knock-off by Bette Carney (who painted the closing painting for the movie “Frida”) to the serene landscapes of Frank McCoy, a retired UMASS Dartmouth Professor of Fine Arts with an international following. Previous Art Drive fish are in homes and art collections across the country.
The fish are currently displayed at Dartmouth and Westport businesses until August 1 and can also be viewed on-line at the Art Drive.
On Friday August 2nd from 6 pm to 8 pm, Westport Rivers Winery will display the Classic Cod in their fields during the Sunset Music Series featuring Putnam Murdock. Admission is $10 per car and there will be live food, beer, and wine for purchase. The fish will also be at the winery on Saturday August 3rd.
During the Art Drive open studio tour on August 10th and 11th, the Cod will be at the Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society, 1205 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth, MA, which will serve as a welcome center for visitors to the Art Drive.
During both preview events, the public will be invited to vote for “Top Cod.” Those who pick the “Top Cod” will be entered in a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to Westport Lobster.
