Lloyd Center Winter’s Morning Owl Prowl (February 2, 2025)

Are you fascinated by owls or enjoy a good old fashioned New England winter before sunrise? If so, this traditional annual Lloyd Center outing is for you.

Owls nest earlier than most birds and are territorial during winter. Screech, Great Horned, and Barred owls are the most common species and each breed on or near the Lloyd Center property. Starting at the Lloyd Center before venturing to other local woodland stops, we’ll attempt to attract owls using taped calls during the predawn hours of peak owl activity.

We’ll end up at Gooseberry and Horseneck, a great place to witness a spectacular sunrise if conditions are right, and to see wintering birds such as waterfowl shorebirds, a Peregrine Falcon, snow buntings, or with luck, a Snowy Owl!

Items to bring/note: flashlight (spotlight a plus) camera, binoculars, and footwear for light walking on forest trails and possibly snow. Warm beverage provided at the Center's Welcome Center.

Winter Woodland Nature Walk (January 11, 2025)

What is there to see on a cold winter’s day in the woods? Perhaps a wandering owl, a Sharp-shinned or Coopers Hawk, overwintering songbirds, or a small herd of White-tailed deer searching for browse. In winter with much wildlife dormant or in full hibernation, signs of life will be explored to include tracks in snow (if conditions allow), and winter tree identification. We’ll traverse the forest stopping at various birding points and visit the main facility with its feeder station and top floor observatory. Come observe the landscape through a “winter lens”.

Items to bring: camera, binoculars, and footwear for light walking on forest trails and possibly snow. Warm beverage provided at LBC Welcome Center

Lloyd Center’s 34th Annual New Year’s Day Beach Walk (January 1, 2025)

Attention nature enthusiasts: Are you interested in birds, marine life, or just the sea itself? If so, join Research Associate, Jamie Bogart, for Lloyd Center’s 34th Annual New Year’s Day walk at Gooseberry Neck, a site where the Center has conducted education programs and research for decades.

This educational walk will focus on birds and birding, as waterbirds (ducks, grebes, loons, gulls, shorebirds) in the intertidal zone, and land birds (raptors, songbirds) on the island interior, all make Gooseberry their winter home. In addition to birds, participants will learn about any other marine life seen, including perhaps a wandering seal, along with the natural forces that constantly shape the island.

The walk is suitable for those wanting to learn about these sensitive and fascinating natural resources, or just interested in socializing during a brisk seaside stroll.

Items to wear/bring: sturdy footwear*, layers, optical equipment if possible (binoculars, camera)
*Terrain is flat but expect to walk over some sand and cobble along the beach.

Please email Jamie at jbogart@lloydcenter.org with any questions about the walk.

Mammals, trees, plants and insects are also a component of our biodiversity.

Items to bring: Hiking footwear, birding binoculars, camera

Pre-register online. If you have specific questions regarding the program, please email Jamie Bogart at jbogart@lloydcenter.org, or call 774-628-9241 and leave a message. During ongoing construction, the best way to reach staff is via email.
