Dharma Voyage Returns to the Lloyd Center
by Ben Booth of Dharma Voyage
Dharma Voyage is looking forward to running another Coastal Rowing program in collaboration with the Lloyd Center this summer. We were very excited about our inaugural season running from the Lloyd Center dock last year, and celebrated many accomplishments. We had a group of novice youth take their first rowing strokes on the Slocum River in our coastal quad (four person sculling boat). They quickly progressed to catching their first waves out on the coast, which is always a thrilling moment. By the end of the season, we challenged them to move out of the big quad and learn to handle the singles for a mix of teamwork and individual responsibility.
We also had some exciting elite rowing action. Members from the US Beach Sprint team came to the Lloyd Center to work with Ben (Dharma Voyage rowing coach) in the quad. They went on to a bronze medal finish at the Beach Sprint Finals in Portugal. In addition, Ben’s own quad team went on to the World Championships (also in Portugal), where they finished 6th place in a wildly competitive international field.
From the Slocum River to the World! We hope this activity encourages our local youth participants to dream big and realize the extent of
their potential.
All of last year’s youth rowers will return this summer, and this multi-year engagement is a hallmark of Dharma Voyage youth programs. In addition to the returning rowers, we aim to sustainably grow our youth coastal rowing program by bringing on two more youth teams this season.
