Environmental Education/Outreach Internships
Do you have a passion for environmental science? Are you experienced or interested in working with youth? The Lloyd Center for the Environment is in need of an Environmental Education/Outreach Interns for the summer season of 2024!
Environmental Education/Outreach Interns assist educators in teaching outdoor nature/science-based programs for our summer season. The Lloyd Center’s educational philosophy is that hands-on learning brings the study of science to life! Additionally, interns assist with various outreach programs and aquaria maintenance. An Environmental Education/Outreach Internship at the Lloyd Center is an excellent way to gain classroom experience, work with live animals, and connect to the local community!
Responsibilities: Interns are responsible for assisting the Education/Naturalist staff in the development and implementation of activities for our Summer Programs, which are introductory environmental programs for children six to nine years old, and more in-depth science courses for students entering 3rd through 8th grades.
Interns may assist with educational outreach programs off-site. Interns also help to maintain our fresh and saltwater aquaria.
Please note: Education Outreach Internships are full-time positions, Monday–Friday 8am-4pm with occasional weekend hours (part-time positions may be considered). Interns must be over the age of 18.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in marine biology, ecology, or environmental science
- One year of college-level courses
- Knowledge of coastal environment
- Experience working with children
- CPR/First Aid Training helpful
- Ability to work well with others
- Positive attitude, enthusiasm, ability to work independently
- Commitment to teaching
- Portuguese or Spanish speaking is a plus

Research Internships / Piping Plovers
This internship position has been filled.
The Lloyd Center for the Environment has an opening for a seasonal shorebird research intern (1) for fieldwork relative to the endangered Piping Plover, on select beaches in Bristol County. Please read our Piping Plover page for further background about this longstanding project.
Summary of field duties:
Interns will assist with monitoring of pairs of plovers/maintenance of fenced refuges, protection of some nests with predator exclosures, data collection regarding all plover nesting activity and factors impacting birds, data entry, and other beach surveys as applicable, as well as educational interaction with beach goers and beach staff during the busy summer season. An Intern will also have the opportunity to assist with other research work, and with tasks relative to working in a nature center environment.
Qualifications:
Academics
(1) Have completed a full year of college level academic courses;
(2) Be following a course of study with an emphasis on wildlife conservation or similar discipline;
(3) Have an interest in endangered species, and preferably ornithology.
Other attributes
1) Sufficient level of fitness for walking in sand while carrying equipment, hammering posts and digging predator exclosures, spending days in the field in hot or otherwise adverse weather;
2) Attentiveness to detail for maintaining season-long field notes;
3) Comfortable interacting with various members of beach community;
5) Ability to work independently after instruction.
Dates: April/May to August, start/end dates flexible
Schedule: Part time in spring, increase to full time (30+ hours) in summer
Weekend and holiday work (Memorial Day and 4th of July) expected (due to beach crowds).
