Lloyd Center Summer Intern Reflects

My internship at the Lloyd Center for the Environment has been a wonderful experience so far. I am an Environmental Studies major at Stonehill College, and I was excited to apply because I had previously taken an Environmental Justice class with one of my professors who also works at the Lloyd Center. That class helped strengthen my interest in environmental issues and made me want to get involved in environmental education and outreach.

This summer, I have been helping with the Young Naturalists and Coastal Explorers summer programs, as well as aiding with school field trips at Barney’s Joy. I work with students throughout the day, help keep activities running smoothly, and support the educators during lessons and outdoor programs. It has been really rewarding to see kids get excited about nature and learn more about the environment around them.

One of my favorite parts of the internship has been helping care for the animals at the Center. I have also learned a lot about local birds, habitats, and ecosystems, through both the summer programs and the field trips. Every week I feel like I am learning something new, whether it is about wildlife, coastal environments, or environmental education itself.

More than anything, this internship has helped me grow in confidence. I feel much more comfortable working with students, speaking up, and taking on responsibilities than I did when I first started. The staff and fellow interns have been incredibly welcoming and supportive, and they have made the experience even better. I have learned a lot from everyone here and I am grateful to be part of such a talented team this summer!
