Lloyd Center Wednesday Bird Walks Return This Month!
Attention bird enthusiasts, including both beginner and more advanced birders. If you like a nice variety of bird species over a relatively small area, complete with an intricate complexity of habitats without having to travel great distances, these weekly walks in at the Lloyd Center for the Environment in South Dartmouth may be for you.
The “Wednesday Bird Walks’ return just as the waterbird migration is kicking into high gear, and the forests have become active with songbirds in their late summer molts. Fledges from forest nests are actively searching for an abundant insect food source, and insects are highly active on our property, including in our butterfly gardens. Our feeder station is active with the songbirds happy to have a supplemental seed source as well.
The estuaries are particularly active, as waders congregate on the salt marsh and in trees overhanging estuaries, osprey adults and young dive for the summer runs of fish, and shorebirds pass through, especially at lower tides
when our mudflats and their invertebrates are exposed. With luck, adults or young Bald Eagles which nest nearby can also be seen.
While the coastal wetland species are the highlight in August, we will pass through the forest interior, so please bring bug spray on these late summer journeys.
Come witness the action as the birds are on the move!
