Passing the Torch of Leadership at the Lloyd Center

When Lloyd Center Executive Director D’Arcy MacMahon and Board Chair Robert “Brodie” MacGregor met last summer to discuss Mr. MacMahon’s plans to retire from his chief-executive position at the Center shortly after the start of the New Year, it set in motion a process of succession-planning for which the Center was well prepared. In a letter to key Lloyd Center supporters in October, Mr. MacGregor reported that the search for a successor was underway, with George Nelson, M.D., Vice-Chair of the Center’s board, heading the search process.

According to Mr. MacGregor, the charge to the board-appointed Search Committee was “to generate a strong pool of candidates and recommend to the board a final candidate considered to be best qualified to meet the leadership needs of the Center, going forward.” He said that members of the Committee, with input from both the staff and the board, would be playing a major role in recruiting, interviewing, and evaluating applicants. “The goal”, he noted, “is to have a successor selected and ready to hit the ground running, by mid-January.” 

In a recent letter to Lloyd Center members, MacGregor reported that, following upon the recent completion of the Center’s new strategic plan, ideas for seriously needed facility improvements were being prepared for review by members of the Center’s Advisory Council, and that plans for a major capital-fund campaign were moving forward with deliberate speed. 

“With demand for the Center’s program services at an all-time high, a new strategic plan unanimously adopted by the board, financial sustainability proposals and suggestions for facility upgrades undergoing review, a professionally conducted pre-campaign study underway, and the Center’s recently acquired 27-acre Lloyd Woods property at last gaining permanent protection under the terms of a conservation restriction, MacMahon said that he felt this was the right time to be “passing the torch”. In addition to wanting to get back to peak-bagging all 48 of the 4,000-footers in the White Mountains and finishing his book on the history of the Head of the Charles Regatta in time for the event’s 50th “running” in 2014, the Lloyd Center director said that he and his wife, Ivy, were feeling a real need to spend more time with their 16 grandchildren, all of whom they felt were “growing up, much too fast.”  “I am humbled”, MacMahon said, “by having had the opportunity to work at the Center with such a talented and dedicated group of teachers, scientists, outreach specialists and volunteers, and I will count my years there as certainly among my most challenging and rewarding.”  

MacGregor said that the board was grateful for MacMahon’s strong leadership over the past nine years, under which members of the Center’s board and staff were continuing to work together to advance a number of promising initiatives. “D’Arcy”, he said, “has been an enthusiastic and energetic leader. The Center will benefit from his efforts for many years to come and, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank him for his dedicated service and wish him well in his long-postponed retirement.”
