Explore wetland, estuary, marine, and forest habitats and participate in authentic data collection. Examine how this data can tell us stories about the plants and animals that inhabit these living laboratories. Engage in investigations and data collection in the woods and on the water. Take part in citizen science programs for you and your students as you sample the diverse habitats and creatures of the Lloyd Center for the Environment.

Learn about sustainable aquaculture with Island Creek Oysters as they share their research on oyster farming methods, provide a hands-on investigation of oyster biology and discuss their involvement in creating innovations, and how data resources on aquaculture are shaping sustainable practices. Spend a day with scientists from the Marine Biological Laboratory as you visit field sites and research laboratories and learn about data available to your students. Investigate how Data Nuggets and other tools can be used to help students design their own research for capstone or science fair projects.

Throughout the course, Wade Institute instructors will weave pedagogy through the science content, highlighting ways to shift lessons towards inquiry and incorporate Science & Engineering Practices, while collecting and analyzing data with professional scientists.

You will leave the course with resources to enrich your teaching toolbox with science investigations that meet the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Framework and NGSS Standards and be equipped with tools to help your students develop research projects.
