Sally & Malcolm Johnston ~ Lloyd Center’s 2015 George G. Haydock Award Recipients

Sally and Malcolm Johnston have been involved in supporting our local environment and various land conservation institutions with time and expertise as well as financially. Malcolm is currently on the board of the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust (DNRT). Sally has been involved with the Lloyd Center for over 15 years; in that time she has served as a member of the Board of Directors for almost 10 years in various positions as Clerk, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and as a Director.  She is also currently a member of the Center’s Finance Committee, and has  also served in that capacity for over five years.

The Lloyd Center has continued to be one of the lucky beneficiaries of the Johnston’s time, labor, energy and enthusiasm over the years.  In particular, the building of the owl mew by Malcolm Johnston has provided a home for Koko, the Center’s in-residence Eastern Screech owl. This building allows the Lloyd Center to house an animal ambassador that has captivated and inspired hundreds of local students, adults and families.  This gift will continue to benefit the Center and the community for years to come.

Sally has also been an enthusiastic volunteer at the Lloyd Center’s Annual Slocum Challenge Regatta, spearheading the organization of the lunch held after the paddlers’ races finish. Everyone is in good spirits thanks to Sally’s efforts of coordinating all of the food donations, pick-ups, and buffet-style presentation. Sally has volunteered at this event every year since it began back in 2006.

Year after year, the Johnston’s have also volunteered at the Center’s annual Clambake, its most important fundraiser, that helps to underwrite the costs of the Lloyd Center’s critically important environmental research and education programs.  No matter how small or large the task, the Johnston’s have always been there to help the Center when in need.  In addition, together Malcolm and Sally have passed on their love for caring for the environment to their son Doug, who interned in the Lloyd Center’s Education Department for two summers.

Choosing an individual(s) for this year’s Haydock Award was certainly an easy “task” for the Lloyd Center Staff and Board of Directors.

The George G. Haydock Award is the Center’s most prestigious award and is presented annually to an individual(s), selected by the staff and board of directors of the Lloyd Center who, in the spirit and tradition exemplified by long-time Lloyd Center supporter and nature enthusiast, Dr. George G. Haydock, is deemed to have personally made a most outstanding contribution to protecting the fragile nature of our coastal environment.
