The announcement from Governor Baker to close schools and daycares in Massachusetts for the remainder of the school year has left many wondering how this will affect the education of our students. The 2020 school year has been a roller coaster of uncertainty. Just as educators and students were gearing up for spring sports and field trips, schools closed their doors, and parents were left to scramble together plans for many weeks. As summer break rolls around, it is time to start planning what to do with students who have already been home for months.

This summer will likely be different than any other before, but the one thing that the staff at the Lloyd Center for the Environment can guarantee is the quality of our Summer Programs. We have been hosting our Young Naturalist and the Coastal Studies Programs for 39 years. Throughout the years, our staff has gained the experience to deliver an educational program to our students, while also having so much fun in the great outdoors!

Our Summer Programs are not quite like other programs you may send your children to. When planning each one of the daily lessons, the staff here uses the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Framework to ensure the best educational opportunity. We provide an experience that teaches our students about science, wildlife, and nature, while following the Next Generation Science Standards. Our programs hit the standards on Life Science, Physical Science, Earth and Space Science, Engineering and much more. We also emphasize hands-on, experiential learning opportunities. We use the Center’s coastal property to its best advantage, as nature provides the key to exciting kids about learning while also having an amazing experience. We truly believe that this is the best way to educate our students.

Additionally, one of the major benefits of our Summer Programs is our low student-to-teacher ratio. After years of experience, we know that it is in the best interest of our students and staff to keep our class sizes small. The lower ratios guarantee that the students in our programs are able to get the best learning experience, while also forming a close bond with our Educators. This not only secures their educational opportunity, but also their emotional well-being during their time at the Lloyd Center.

Although it is uncertain what these next few months will bring, we are looking forward to warm weather and sunshine as these days beg for lessons on crabs and ospreys down by the estuary. July afternoons searching for frogs and toads on the trails is a special way to spend the summer. We can’t wait to see our students’ smiling faces as they learn about anatomy, plant biology, renewable energy, and so much more!
