Three foundations donate to the Lloyd Center’s capital campaign
Three foundations have committed $25,000 each to the Lloyd Center’s $3 million “Transforming a Legacy” capital campaign to support a new green building and expanded educational programs.
The Bafflin Foundation of Rhode Island donated toward site improvements in keeping with the efforts of its founder Lois Orswell to “support plants and the earth,” according to a news release.

Through the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, the Acushnet Foundation Fund committed $25,000 to be paid over the next five years in support of “efforts that safeguard the environment.”
The Henry H. Crapo Foundation Fund pledged a total of $25,000 over five years for the “educational and charitable project (serving) New Bedford and neighboring towns,” the release said.
The support of these foundations speaks to contribution of the Lloyd Center in the region, especially in the area of environmental education, said Gaelen Canning, a consultant for institutional advancement.
“It’s good to know that they are supportive of the role we play in the SouthCoast community,” she said. “And we are doing something new and exciting to be getting the support.”
Last May, the 36-year-old nature center embarked on its first capital campaign. It has already raised more than $1.8 million between gifts, grants and pledges, Canning said.
The first $1.5 million will pay for future programming tailored to under-served schools and boost the endowment increases to support them. The second half will fund an extensive expansion and renovation project to build a new energy-efficient Welcome Center expected to be the greenest building in the region.
