Transforming A Legacy ~ Buildings Begin!

On April 4th, contractors, carpenters and machinery will arrive at the Lloyd Center as the first of our three facility projects gets underway.  Sixteen-on-Center, a highly respected contracting firm from Tiverton, RI with a special interest and expertise in “green building” will begin construction of the new, 600-square-foot Teaching Pavilion on the Slocum River.

The forest, marshland, and estuary waterfront are important aspects of all environmental education programs which occur at the Center. Our acclaimed experiential education curriculum enables participants to experience the unique ecology of our coast.   While exploring the maritime forest, students are surrounded by a landscape that offers a myriad of opportunities to learn about species diversity, forest processes, and adaptation. In the saltmarsh and estuary, students have the opportunity observe, catch, and identify live organisms. It is at the waterfront especially, where students get captivated by the natural beauty of their surroundings and the sensory stimuli which then demands deeper inquiry into the experience they are having.

In support of this learning, the Teaching Pavilion will provide an open-air meeting location and a shelter in inclement weather that is built into the natural environment along the waterfront. It will be accessible through handicapped upgrades of the existing waterfront trails so all visitors can now be involved in the teaching opportunities at the waterfront.
